Snow Time Health

This is a time in our lives where we want good and strong health for enduring the Winter months.  How you stay healthy in the Winter can affect your health and wellbeing in the Summer, and vice versa. This includes the healthy lifestyle that you hold all year round that builds a cumulative effect on your health.  This word lifestyle is a broad range of categories of things that you do everyday, to things that you do on occasions. These categories include; amount of good sleep, nutrition, exercise, relaxation time, work time, family time, social time, and hobbies. Now you might ask, how do I organize all of these different parts of my life into being healthy and balanced for me? Where do I start?
A great place to start is with finding an acupuncturist or an Ayurvedic medical professional.  An acupuncturist is not just there to help treat aches and pains, they are there to help guide the patient in their lifestyle choices to better improve their health.  Ancient acupuncturists used to prescribe recipes for meals to cook and eat, exercises to do regularly, and hobbies that are healthy for each person based on their health issues and interests.  Guess what? Acupuncturists still do that!  Ayurvedic Wellness Counselors do that too. One may teach Qi Gong exercises to do to help increase circulation for a shoulder injury, while the other may teach Yoga poses (asanas) to help ease heartburn.  The goal is to build a lifestyle plan for you while working with the lifestyle you already have.  There may be suggestions to what you eat or do that may directly affect your health condition, or that changing may improve your preventative health care plan.
Do not worry about having to be perfect it is our studies, and analyzing of your body, mind, and emotions including tongue and pulse readings, that give the direct answers to what you need.  We also work to empower you and strengthen your accountability so that you don’t get distracted, and stay on the right path with regular appointments. The gentle and time tested ways of daily living towards longevity, and healing of what you may have health issue-wise is where Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine helps.
Winter is a wonderful time to begin your health journey with us through online virtual appointments for those living in northeast Ohio.  You may also learn more about arthritis care on your own with Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda in the book, “A Modern Fold on Joint Pain,” by Jennifer Saferstein M.S., L.Ac., A.P. This book is for sale on Amazon.com. New to Golden Leaf Natural Health are our live webinars on specific health issue topics and wellbeing topics, visit our “Welcome” page to learn more and to sign up. Let us know what you are working on this Winter in our comments section under this blog article, and feel free to ask us any questions in the comments as well.

Have a wonderful Winter!

Heart Health Month is Practiced Every Month

February is heart health month and we at Golden Leaf Natural Health would like to bring some more awareness on how to improve your heart health. There are some basic lifestyle choices and actions that are important for increasing heart health, they include:

- Diet/Nutrition
- Exercise
- Relaxation
- Sleep

Diet and nutrition are very important for heart health, if you chose to eat a high fat, fried food, spicy food or have a high alcohol diet, you are risking putting too much stress on you heart to function properly through the damage and high cholesterol that that those types of diets can bring.  If you eat a balanced diet with a focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats, then you are helping your heart.

Exercise is something that can be fun and bring joy into your life.  There are so many types of exercises, it is important to ask your doctor what type is best for you.  There is mild exercising like walking, Tai Chi and stretching. Moderate exercise such as jogging, light aerobics, yoga, Pilates and  light weight training. Then advanced exercise like team sports, heavy weight training, and marathons. A great plan is to aim for a total of at least 30 minutes of exercising a day.  This could be 15 minutes of stretching in the morning and 15 minutes of walking in the evening before or after dinner. The goal is to get your heart pumping and body moving to something that is not an emotional stressor, or physical stressor that is bad for the body.

Relaxation is importation to learn to achieve. It is a state of body and mind that most feel before going to bed, but many can feel when sitting in their favorite chair after a long day of work.  It is a state of being that you want to reach for at least 30 minutes a day, and just like exercise it can be split up in time chunks at different times a day.  This could be meditating, or reading a book.  This could be having a long conversation at dinner where its warm and caring. This could be achieved studying artwork or listening to relaxing music.

Sleep is necessary in life.  Sleep at its ideal is around 8 hours a night.  Learning how to close your computer and calm your mind can bring a better sleep.  This with a combination of a healthy diet, regular exercise and experienced relaxation is the goal. There are many different health issues that need assistance with achieving a good night sleep as well, so if you are having trouble sleeping meeting with your doctor is important to help you figure out why.

The other main thing to consider with a healthy heart is to drink plenty of water throughout your day.  The human body is over 70% water, so don’t be shy about filling yourself up!  As always if you would like to learn more or if you have any questions about anything mentioned in this blog, please write us a comment!

Keep a Health Care Journal

10/14/2020

There are many healthcare issues that have a causing factor, or a correlating factor as to when or why they happen. For example when someone gets a tension headache, it may happen after working for over 8 hours a day sitting at a desk without drinking enough water and stretching. A different type of headache can occur from an intolerance to nitrates in deli meat and hotdogs as another person’s headache cause. One of the greatest ways to finding out the cause of a problem can be with keeping a Healthcare Journal. While there are many issues that arise over a long period of time, learning what questions to answer and how to keep a Healthcare Journal can be of great benefit!

These journals have many purposes, from helping to discover the cause of a health condition, to helping you change the cause, if possible. The journals can also help you return to better health with your cholesterol and more by noting your diet during the day, and exercise. A person can find out where they need to stretch more before a workout, because their body aches in certain places. Also in the journal a record of the person’s sleep time, quality and how many times they awaken at night. The journal can help from the big health issues to the smaller variants throughout the day.

Here are some of the main questions to answer daily in your Healthcare Journal and then you can build upon the information gathered each day to address your specific healthcare focuses, and definitely add in questions that your doctor wants to know.
  1. Time of wake up, do you wake up feeling refreshed and ready for the day? How many hours of sleep did you get?
  2. Breakfast, time and what you ate.
  3. Medications, times and doses?
  4. What time do you get to work, is it stressful everyday?
  5. Type of work, on feet? At a desk? How many hours a day?
  6. Have you had symptoms yet of your issue or issues?
  7. Lunch, time and what you ate.
  8. Did you have an energy drop?
  9. Snack, time and what you ate.
  10. Did you have time to get up and stretch during your work day?
  11. What time are you done with work?
  12. How do you feel by the end of your work day, did you have any energy drops or fatigue? Did you have any signs or symptoms from a health condition?
  13. Social, how often do you socialize?
  14. Do you workout, if so what do you do?
  15. Dinner, time and what you ate.
  16. Relaxation time, what do you do?
  17. Snacks, what did you eat?
  18. How much water did you drink today in ounces?
  19. Bedtime, what time? Do you feel tired or restless?

Once you have a week or two of the journal written, you may start to find patterns in your daily routines that may need to be changed. A person could find that they’re not drinking enough water each day or throughout the week and that contributes to arthritis pain. Another person could find a strong fatigue pattern during the day is due to drinking coffee after 4pm each day, leading to staying up late at night and when a person doesn’t get enough sleep, fatigue can happen. Some patterns are easy to adjust, others you need to discuss options with your doctor and a medication for the problem may be the answer. A doctor might also recommend going to an acupuncturist or an Ayurvedic medicine practitioner to help with body, lifestyle and nutrition therapies. May you find great success in your health and life with keeping a Healthcare Journal!

Walnuts are a wonderful snacking and cooking nut that hold a lot of value in Traditional Chinese Medicine Nutrition.  The temperature of the nut is warming, and its flavor is sweet.  It helps the Kidneys and Lungs. Walnuts boost the Yang of the body, the Qi, and the Jing.  Walnuts counteract cold and resolve phlegm.  There are teachings that correlate the look of a food to what they help, and many say that walnuts resemble the look of the brain, with a left and right hemisphere, or section.  Therefore the food walnut must help strengthen the brain and thinking.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Nutrition

Traditional Chinese Medicine Nutrition is a nutrition system for the mind, body and spirit based on foods that we have in America as well as all over the world.  Each item of food whether it is an apple or a cheese burger is representative of different tastes and qualities of nourishment that our body wants or needs.  When you add these qualities up and include the season you are eating the food in, and your constitution according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, dietary advice can become very valuable.

Have you heard that changing your diet can change your health issues?  It may take a short amount of time or a long amount of time depending of how long you have had the condition and what the condition is, but diet plays a big part in your day to day health. When meeting for a Traditional Chinese Medicine Nutrition session, you will be asked a long list of questions from stress levels, energy levels throughout the day, to sleep patterns and more.  Then you will be asked more detailed questions to narrow down your constitutional tendencies.  This type of care and consideration is very special and what makes Chinese Medicine Nutrition stand out, because it is about nourishing with food, your mind, body and spirit individually.

Sometimes a person with diabetes has to change 3 items in their diet, and add 2 more items. Sometimes a person with low back pain has to add 3 items into their diet and take away 2 items.  We always start with small changes to ease your body into the changes.  Eating healthier is the goal overall and can be seen with the nutrition advice discussed during our Traditional Chinese Medicine Nutrition Telemedicine Session. After the first session each following session includes a guided Acupressure Telemedicine session to help you strengthen your health (mind, body and spirit) even further.

Positivity is the Key.

Positivity is to be happy about an outcome no matter what.  It is to hold an up beat attitude, a healthy outlook, and an attractive demeanor. To be a positive person is to always look at the bright side of any situation.

Today only happens once, make it amazing! As you wake up you may use this phrase as your mantra, your saying.  It is wonderful to be aware that you are living your life, and no matter what, you are going to make it positive and amazing. What you do during your day after saying this phrase is up to you!  Living with healthy lifestyle choices is what I recommend, from drinking a glass of lemon water, to doing yoga or Tai Chi in the morning.

Drinking enough water throughout the day can change your energy levels.  Doing enough exercise throughout the day and week can change your energy levels as well.  When you have enough energy and a steady flow throughout the day, it is easy to be positive. A positive person smiles easily and carries themself well.

Positivity is something we strive for, it can make any situation achievable! We each go through many different encounters and processes in life.  Staying positive can make the tough encounters easier and more attainable. Whether its trying out for a part in a community play, to working on loosing 15lbs before Summer, staying positive throughout can win you big points with your happiness.

If your feeling like your going through something with your health that has made you less positive and its complicated your life, think about trying an in person acupuncture treatment, or a virtual guided acupressure session.  You can recommend these options to a friend and pass the positivity around. to learn more please visit Vivify Wellness at Avenues.

Gratitude

During the times that we are in with the Corona Virus Pandemic, we can look towards the emotion of gratitude to feel connected and stronger about where to be.  Gratitude towards someone or something can bring more fulfillment to one's day and to their life.  There are so many people and things to be grateful for, from the grocery store workers, to the items that we buy there.  From the front line medical workers, to the car mechanics.  We can be grateful for all of those people and things.

When we feel grateful, in Chinese Medicine, our heart fills with happiness and joy arrives. A healthy heart is a very important thing to have, so modifying your emotions can sometimes help to bring your body to a healthier state over time.  The Pandemic has been going on for months now and its time to check in and bring some control back to how you are feeling.  You can choose to see the brighter side of things, and be filled with gratitude.

Once you've achieved the awareness of what is truly important during these times, keep a journal, track your emotions.  Would you rather feel fearful, or grateful, can you overcome the fear with thought, are your worries calmed down with ease, or does it need extra help.  It is ok to find extra help at these times, again, your emotions can shape your physical health, and we want you to be less fearful, worried, and scared, and more rational, thoughtful, and grateful.  Understanding is another term to be, and become as we reach more and more days towards the coming of Summer.

If you feel like you are having trouble converting your fears, worries and anxieties into more healthy emotions, consider trying an Acupuncture treatment in person, or an Acupressure Telemedicine meeting.  The goal of these meetings will be to help bring relaxation and calm thoughts to where there isn't, and help build a buffer so that you feel more supported as you go along with your days during these times.  To learn more and to sign up for a meeting please visit www.vififywellnessatavenues.com/acupuncture

Do you have aches and pains?

Has Shelter in Place brought you more discomfort?

Fear causes our body to naturally tense up, and without enough stretching, and physical activity, one can experience muscle and tendon aches and pains. Drinking plenty of water can help, but so can Acupressure.  Acupressure is a specific type of body massage that can be self done with a guide, another person.  It is the study of using over 365 acupressure points on the body to help alleviate physical aches, pains, and health issues over a period of time.  One session of acupressure can bring a calming effect to a person.  Multiple sessions once a week can bring strong and longer lasting results.  Our Acupuncturist Jennifer Saferstein M.S., L.Ac., A.P. is offering new Acupressure Telemedicine sessions that aim towards helping you in your home, overcome aches and pains with your help.  They are easy and enjoyable 20 minute meetings on a HIPPA compliant virtual platform. Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis for body aches and fatigue that have no known origin or visual signs. The pain is very much something real, and affects millions of people around the world.  The pain varies at times from dull aches to strong sharp pains in the muscle areas of the body.  This pain leads to fatigue that can last a month or longer if the Fibromyalgia is in a flare up.

Acupuncture and Acupressure are very helpful with pain management and energy replenishment.  It is wonderful when one finally reaches a healing tool that can help! You are not alone. Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis, but does not define the individual, remember that you are a person, and getting proper pain management treatments can bring you back.

If you have Fibromyalgia, or know of someone who does, trying Acupuncture with Jennifer Saferstein M.S., L.Ac., A.P., at Vivify Wellness at Avenues may be the right choice. She also hosts Acupressure Telemedicine treatments if the office is closed due to COVID19, or it is too hard to travel to an office. Exercise In The Spring!

5/11/2020

The word spring inspires us to spring up and do something. After the long Winter here in North East Ohio, Spring shows us a way out of the cold and into the awakening of warmth. Our jackets change, the buds on the trees appear, and the early flowers show up. As the wood awakens, the wood element brings us to the energy of organization.  Organization needs energy and we find that working out helps with the new found abundance of work to do.

There are numerous ways one can exercise, from middle school gym stretches, aerobics, to running and biking. Yoga and breathing exercises are another way to exercise! The main thing to focus on is getting your body pumping, blood moving and breathing heavier.  A little sweat helps too! Exercising in the Spring is a great thing to do.

To manage body pain, if you have it, consider doing a Telehealth/Telemedicine session with Jennifer Saferstein M.S., L.Ac..  These sessions includes a guided self-acupressure massage with breathing techniques. They are only 20 minutes, so they are easy to fit into your day, and cost an affordable $40.00. The better
you feel the better the season of Spring is, and the following seasons to come! Please visit www.vivifywellnessatavenues.com/acupuncture to schedule an appointment.
