February is heart health month and we at Golden Leaf Natural Health would like to bring some more awareness on how to improve your heart health. There are some basic lifestyle choices and actions that are important for increasing heart health, they include:

- Diet/Nutrition
- Exercise
- Relaxation
- Sleep

Diet and nutrition are very important for heart health, if you chose to eat a high fat, fried food, spicy food or have a high alcohol diet, you are risking putting too much stress on you heart to function properly through the damage and high cholesterol that that those types of diets can bring.  If you eat a balanced diet with a focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats, then you are helping your heart.

Exercise is something that can be fun and bring joy into your life.  There are so many types of exercises, it is important to ask your doctor what type is best for you.  There is mild exercising like walking, Tai Chi and stretching. Moderate exercise such as jogging, light aerobics, yoga, Pilates and  light weight training. Then advanced exercise like team sports, heavy weight training, and marathons. A great plan is to aim for a total of at least 30 minutes of exercising a day.  This could be 15 minutes of stretching in the morning and 15 minutes of walking in the evening before or after dinner. The goal is to get your heart pumping and body moving to something that is not an emotional stressor, or physical stressor that is bad for the body.

Relaxation is importation to learn to achieve. It is a state of body and mind that most feel before going to bed, but many can feel when sitting in their favorite chair after a long day of work.  It is a state of being that you want to reach for at least 30 minutes a day, and just like exercise it can be split up in time chunks at different times a day.  This could be meditating, or reading a book.  This could be having a long conversation at dinner where its warm and caring. This could be achieved studying artwork or listening to relaxing music.

Sleep is necessary in life.  Sleep at its ideal is around 8 hours a night.  Learning how to close your computer and calm your mind can bring a better sleep.  This with a combination of a healthy diet, regular exercise and experienced relaxation is the goal. There are many different health issues that need assistance with achieving a good night sleep as well, so if you are having trouble sleeping meeting with your doctor is important to help you figure out why.

The other main thing to consider with a healthy heart is to drink plenty of water throughout your day.  The human body is over 70% water, so don’t be shy about filling yourself up!  As always if you would like to learn more or if you have any questions about anything mentioned in this blog, please write us a comment!
